Paul Pierce has Shaquille O’Neal to thank for his nickname ‘The Truth’.
On March 13, 2001, during his third season at the time, Pierce scored a game-high 42 points against the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. After the game O’Neal pulled aside Boston Herald writer Steve Bulpett, and said “Take this down. My name is Shaquille O’Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don’t take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn’t know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth.”
In the following video, Bulpett and O’Neal recap the story of Pierce’s nickname.
