Andrea Pirlo – l’architetto (the Architect)

Italian legend and 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo was given his nickname “l’architetto” (the Architect) by his teammates in the Italian national team, because of his outstanding playmaking ability, and his sublime passing skills which sets up many attacking opportunities. Pirlo is one of the greatest deep-lying playmakers midfielders of all time, and is also widely regarded as one of the best free-kick takers in football history.

Pirlo has also been called by his fans as “il professore” (the Professor), “Maestro”, and “Mozart”.

With his iconic long hair and well groomed beard, Pirlo is one of the most recognisable sportsmen in Europe. Talksport did a video asking females if they preferred Pirlo without his beard or with his beard, and the answers were unanimously positive for the bearded look.
